I just returned this morning from Haiti. Not only is there nearly 150,000 dead but ALL of the medical schools are totally destroyed, and most medical students killed. The roads are barely open and it takes three hours just to enter the city by truck. Everyone please pray for proper utilization of resources. I worked in areas with over 200 medical staff falling over one another and truckloads of supplies, and yet in tent cities of over 5,000 people, there were only two first year medical students, a bottle of ibuprofen, betadine and gauze. There is no overall communication/organization/ direction. If it was not for the multitude of missions organizations already with an internal infrastructure in Haiti, the catastrophic losses would be insurmountable. Â Haiti will need multiple teams in about 6 weeks to handle all of the water-borne diseases when rainy season starts. EVERYONE is living in the streets afraid to enter any building still left standing and this coupled with the tent cities will cause outbreaks of cholera, dysentery, measles, typhoid, and pneumonia, as well as still infected wounds and the high likelihood of tetanus. Please share this and I will be glad to help with any additional teams later in the year whether in Haiti or elsewhere. God bless, and may God bless and restore Haiti. Â Dr Jeff Chapman |
